First stop in Kentucky?

“Land, family, home, liberty, justice, and BURGERS. ”

Laha’s Red Castle

Since 1934, the Laha’s have served burgers to the community. Although Mae Owens has worked the griddle for more than 30 years, she retired on the show and the Mayor declares an official “Mae Owen’s” day in her honor!

The burgers are known to bring customers in simply by their smell. The burger smell fills the town square air and reaches the Shell gas station up the road! When asked why Mae works so hard, her response is simple – “It’s in my blood.” The $2 burgers are nothing more than a smothered beef patty made with love. Chef Newman Miller joins John T. Edge for a burger and describes his menu favorites.

Second stop in Kentucky?

Jake’s 150 Quick Stop

The second stop on TrueSouth Kentucky is famous gas station sausage spot – 150 Quick Stop in Bardstown, Kentucky. Although it may look like a modern gas station, it functions as an old country store. They sell 600 sausage biscuits daily. Good pork, red pepper, and sage are the three main components of the sausage. Chef Newman Miller swears by the 70/30 grind, and refuses to buy sausage anywhere else.

Kentucky Bourbon

Lastly, Edge talks to New Haven liquor store owner, Tommy Mouser. His liquor store used to be the only liquor store up until Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Mouser mentions his bootleggin’ days and stories of moonshine gallon confiscations.

Whats Kentucky without liquor, bootleggin’ and bourbon anyway? Edge highlights the recent bourbon boom, Makers Mark and how it has Kentucky changing. Just up until recently, Hodgenville was a dry county and won by only 10 votes to go wet.
