The last time Sturgill Simpson emerged from the woodwork, he was Cuttin’ Grass and slanging Dick Daddy merch for a good cause. Nowadays he’s passing the time working on the next Martin Scorsese movie, Killers Of The Flower Moons, with Jason Isbell. Now we’ve just gotten word that we can expect a new album. Sturgill Simpson “The Ballad Of Dood And Juanita” will officially be released on August 20, 2021. Mark your calendars!
For those of you who enjoyed the surprise bluegrass album from the Kentucky native, you’re set for another treat. This Sturgill Simpson new album release, The Ballad of Dood and Juanita, features the same band who played on those bluegrass albums. Moreover, it was recorded in less than a week. When you get the right people in the room and the juices are flowing, it’s only a matter of putting it down!
This officially marks Sturgill Simpsons 5th studio album. If we can gain anything from the announcement it’s simple, this is going to be “yer papaw’s country music!” Previously, Sturgill has mentioned that he might do 5 albums and then bow out and evaporate. Therefore, this could be a bittersweet release.
“I just wanted to write a story — not a collection of songs that tell a story, but an actual story, front to back,” Simpson said in a statement, describing the album as a “rollercoaster ride through all the styles of traditional country and bluegrass and mountain music that I love, including gospel and a cappella.”

However, if we’ve learned anything about this creative genius over the years, expect a perfectly placed curveball. His official counting could differ a bit from ours, and we already know he’s more than knee-deep on the producing side of things.

The official release date for this new album is set for August 20th, 2021. Additionally, there will be a vinyl offering on December 3rd, 2021 for those of you looking for those perfect Christmas gifts for the person who has it all.
