In case you didn’t know, Sturgill’s character Brother Marshall is part of Steve Zahn’s militia in the HBO series. He’s been quietly lurking in the background all season, but last night he stole the spotlight with his incredible singing chops. Seriously, he nailed it.

It turns out Sturgill and the show’s creator, Danny McBride, are longtime pals with similar creative styles. They both appreciate the path Sturgill took to success and his desire to defy people’s expectations. Talk about a dynamic duo.

If you’re not familiar with Sturgill’s work, he released his last studio album called “The Ballad of Dood and Juanita.” He’s also collaborated with Angel Olsen and performed at Willie Nelson’s 90th birthday bash. This guy is on fire!

“The Righteous Gemstones” has been delighting audiences with its hilarious and dysfunctional family of televangelists. It’s currently one of the best shows on TV, and last night’s episode was a real doozy. Especially thanks to Sturgill Simpson’s show-stopping performance.

Now, here’s the deal. “All the Gold in California” may not be a religious song, but it’s undeniably cinematic. Just imagine Sturgill’s powerful vocals backed by a choir of fire. Unfortunately, we can’t share a video of his performance, but you can definitely enjoy the studio version without any spoilers. However, prepare to have your boots tappin’ and your heart singin’ along!

Larry Gatlin & the Gatlin Brothers Band

This catchy tune was penned by the talented Larry Gatlin and performed by his incredible band. Just picture it: August of ’79, a summer anthem is born! And boy, did it make waves. This little ditty rocketed to the top spot on the U.S. Hot Country Songs chart, establishing itself as an absolute hit. Get ready to groove to the rhythm of this timeless classic!

The cover is officially credited to Brother Marshall and the Choir of Fire, complete with its own cover art. Trust us, it goes hard. Sturgill and his backup singers really know how to hit those key changes. Don’t believe us? Listen to the cover and the original by Larry Gatlin yourself.

And if you’re anything like us, you’ll spend your evening diving down a YouTube rabbit hole of “All the Gold in California” videos after watching the episode. Just a quick bonus for you, we found a 2018 TV performance by the Gatlin Brothers and the Oak Ridge Boys that could easily pass as a scene from “The Righteous Gemstones.”

What a song, listed as Brother Marshall and The Choir of Fire. Give it a listen and prepare to be blown away.
