Post Malone Covers Country Music with Dwight Yoakam’s Band For Matthew McConaughey’s Fundraiser Show
Post Malone covers Sturgill Simpson “You Can Have The Crown,” and you will be left thoroughly amazed after watching the video.
Matthew McConaughey hosted a charity telethon, We’re Texas: Giddy Up To Give Back. This was a streaming show to raise money for folks affected by the recent devastating storm in the Lone Star State. Matthew McConaughey and his wife Camila started a relief fund, and this event featured many prominent artists who are also natives to the region.
Post Malone was the last of those artists to be featured on the show, and he came out with a major curveball. McConaughey introduced him as “a friend of mine, a brother,” and the show appears to be coming to a close. Posty comes into frame and introduces himself with a few words. He says “I’m very grateful and very happy to be a part of this.” The singer goes on surprise fans with, “we’ve got a couple great musicians and we’re just here to play some of my favorite country-esque tunes, and just have a good time.”
He toasts the band with his signature Bud Light beer choice, and the leading guitarist appears to have some neat bourbon in his lowball. Post Malone then launches into a rendition of the Brad Paisley hit, “I’m Gonna Miss Her (The Fishin’ Song).” Paisley released this hit in 2002, and it went on to become a No. 1 hit for the country artist. You can see Post enjoying himself during the performance, as he lets out yell during verses and then cracks a smile.
After that, the credits start to run for the show and the camera pans back to Malone as he asks the band if they have a bedtime. Following a few chuckles, they launch into an insane rendition a country outlaw song that has a cult following of its own. Post Malone covers Sturgill Simpson, “You Can Have The Crown.” By the time he rolls through the chorus, you will surely agree with lyrics. “Oh, I sing ’em real pretty, I sing ’em real sad/ And all the people in the crowd say he ain’t half bad.” Yes indeed, he ain’t half bad if we say so ourselves.
Kentucky Connection:
Ironically, even though this was a Texas benefit, featuring a rapper who grew up in Grapevine, TX. There are several Kentucky connections in this whole dynamic. Obviously, Post Malone covers Sturgill Simpson “You Can Have The Crown” for starters. Simpson released this song on his debut album High Top Mountain. Sturgill also did another rendition of the song himself, on his bluegrass album Cuttin’ Grass, Vol. 2.
Secondly, during his performance of these country tunes, he’s joined by Dwight Yoakam’s touring band. Post Malone obviously has talent that seem to have no limits or boundaries, but backing from Dwight Yoakam’s band just adds more validity to the entire performance.
Dwight Yoakam was born in the Eastern Kentucky town of Pikeville. U.S. Route 23 runs through the region north into Columbus and Toledo, Ohio and onto the automotive hubs of Michigan. On his song “Readin’, Rightin’, Route 23” he pays tribute to his childhood move from the region which has a long and contentious history with the coal mines.
Kentuckians used to express that “the three Rs” of “Readin’, ‘Ritin’, and ‘Rithmetic”, were actually “Readin’, ‘Ritin’, and Route 23 North”. Luckily for Dwight, U.S. Route 23 is also known by folks of the Commonwealth as Country Music Highway. This unique area of Appalachia has produced several other artists such as Loretta Lynn, Crystal Gayle, The Judds, Chris Stapleton, Billy Ray Cyrus, Tom T. Hall, Ricky Skaggs, Keith Whitley, Dwight Yoakam and Patty Loveless.
There happen to be a couple other artists from the Eastern Kentucky region, Sturgill Simpson and Tyler Childers. Post Malone obviously tips his hat to Sturgill on this performance, but he’s also been vocal about being a fan of Tyler Childers. Post appeared on the Jimmy Fallon show, wearing a Tyler Childers shirt.
Will We See a Post Malone Sturgill Simpson Collaboration?
Post Malone is certainly no stranger to country music. Whether you’ve noticed or not, the rapper has made several guest appearances on Dwight Yoakam’s SiriusXM station as part of the Greater Bakersfield series.
Sturgill Simpson has also hinted that he would be up for a collaboration of sorts on an instrumental album. After watching this whole thing, and understanding how Sturgill has mentioned blending all sorts of genres, this doesn’t seem like a reach at all.
Furthermore, Sturgill confessed that he and Post sometimes FaceTime drunk, and that he would like to produce a live instrumentation Post Malone album someday.
“Feeling that Posty sauce in my kitchen at my wife’s insistence months back. No this is not on the grass album but it prolly shoulda been.
My kids love “Spider-verse” so I’ve prolly seen it about 87 times. I posted this way back in March in the DDSS days but my rural WiFi caused the upload to look like it was recorded on a brick so here it is for the ride or die’s.
Full disclosure: Posty & me facetime drizzunk sometimes and he’s literally the sweetest kid on the planet. I not so secretly wanna produce a live instrumentation album on him… Because my life is dope and I do dope shit.”
So there you have it fans, there’s one way to help push this along — demand it!
