The Old Fitzgerald Bottled In Bond Series, otherwise known as the Old Fitzgerald Decanter Series, is a twice-yearly release. These allocated bourbon releases happen once in the Spring and once in the Fall. The Old Fitzgerald Bottled In Bond Spring 2021 release was an 8-year bourbon whiskey, which was a first for the decanter series. Meanwhile, the Fall 2021 Old Fitzgerald 11-year old rounded out last year’s lineup.
The Spring 2022 Edition Old Fitzgerald Bottled-in-Bond Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey comes with a 17-Year-Old age statement. It is compromised of only 120 barrels which were distilled in the fall of 2004, bottled in the spring of 2022, and becomes the ninth annual release of the BIB series.
Regardless of the age statements from release to release, these allocated bourbons are quality pours. At the standard BIB 100 proof, they’re also easy sippers. So crack a fresh one and don’t be shy when you’re filling your favorite bourbon glass!
Review & Tasting Notes
This edition marks the ninth national release of Old Fitzgerald Bottled-in-Bond Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey under Heaven Hill’s production. The Bardstown distillery acquired the bourbon brand back in 1999. It has grown to become one of the most highly sought after bottles from the Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience gift shop.
ThisOld Fitzgerald 17-Year spring release is comprised of bourbon barrels distilled in the fall of 2004, and then dumped and bottled in the spring of 2022. Over the course of this twice-annual bourbon release, it has typically ranged from 8 to 17-year age statements. Being that it is a bottled in bond product, the proofing is precisely set at 100 proof.
The 2022 Old Fitzgerald Bottled In Bond Fall edition features a green label, which has become consistent across all spring releases. Contrarily, the fall release features a black label for those bourbon geeks keeping tabs. The tax strip discloses when the juice was officially produced and bottle. This is a standard signature of transparency consistent on all bottled-in-bond products.
This wheated bourbon is bottled in an ornate decanter, inspired by the original 1950’s Old Fitzgerald diamond decanter honoring its historic Bottled-in-Bond designation.
Each release is typically rare and unique to the season, with various age statements available. There have been some instances of duplicate years in age statements. However, thisOld Fitzgerald 17 Year release is the first 17-year bourbon.

Proof & ABV
This Old Fitzgerald 17 Year is bottled at the standard 100 proof for BIB regulations. The 100-proofing is the equivalent of 50% ABV.
Mash Bill
The Old Fitzgerald Bottled In Bond Series utilizes a wheated bourbon mashbill. Therefore, the mash bill consists of 75% corn, 20% wheat, and 5% malted barley. The Old Fitz brand got its first taste of wheat at the helm of Arthur Philip Stitzel and Julian P. Van Winkle during the late 1920s.
Therefore the tradition of using wheat instead of rye as the flavoring grain or “small” grain continues today. The use of winter wheat instead of rye replaces spicier notes with softer and more rounder profile.
