Recap

This Citrus Bowl game was easily one of the best bowl games of the day, and we’re imaging that every fan in the stadium probably left with a weak voice. This game was a battle to the very end. There were smash-mouth plays producing injuries that piled up on both sides of the ball, and huge break-out plays alike!

Kentucky would come out in the first half getting it going on more on the offensive side of the ball, producing 13 points to close the half. The Iowa offense couldn’t seem to put together a drive, only scoring 3 points in the first half of play.

However, all of that would seem to flip in the second half opening as Iowa was running all over the Wildcat defense. The Hawkeyes coaching staff seemed to regroup during halftime and Kentucky couldn’t come up with an answer on either side of the ball really.

That all changed in the closing minutes of the game however as the tides started to turn once again. After a huge defensive stop, the Wildcat quarterback Will Levis would go on an 80-yard drive for eight plays. A total of 79 of those yards would come via Wan’Dale Robinson! He picked up a huge 17-yard catch on third-and-10 to keep the drive going. Later he would turn another catch over the top of the defense into a 52-yard breakout play that took him all of the way down to the one-yard line!

However, the Wildcats offensive line picked up a 5-yard penalty for a false start which took them back to the 6-yard line. Running back, Rodriguez would take a handoff on the next play trying to reach the edge and turn it up field but he was met in the backfield by a Hawkeye trying to blowup the play. The Iowa defender couldn’t seem to wrap-up the Kentucky back though as he came plowing into the endzone. He busted through several defenders and one of his own blockers even to go barreling into the endzone for the go-ahead score! Still, this would leave 1:43 on the clock, giving Iowa another shot to tie or go ahead.

The Kentucky Wildcats would come up with another huge play however! This 2022 Citrus Bowl game would see DeAndre Square come up with a game-ending interception with 48 seconds left.
