Derby Pie was a recipe created by the Melrose Inn in Prospect Kentucky in 1950. Owners Walter and Leaudra Kern, along with their son George Kern were the creators of the derby pie. Derby pie is a recipe that consists of a delicious chocolate and walnut tart in a pie shell with pastry dough crust. Although Derby Pie is often associated with the Kentucky Derby, the story of the name surprisingly came from a family dilemma on what to name the pie. The classic “picking a name out of a hat” took place, and long and behold came about – Derby Pie!
