The dog elected Rabbit Hash, KY mayor is named Wilbur, and is French.

For the fourth time in history, an unincorporated Kentucky community near the Ohio River has elected a dog as mayor. Actually, this becomes the fourth time in a row that a dog has been elected Rabbit Hash, KY mayor.

Several of you read the headline and questioned, was a dog really elected mayor of Rabbit Hash, Kentucky? Others of you read the headline and questioned how does a dog even become mayor? Others question, is this French Bulldog Wilbur who is the new reelected mayor, have a staff and administration to assist with the mayoralty and official duties. The answer is, actually he does, sometimes. The answer is it’s totally real, and may only be possible in a few places in the world, but most definitely in Rabbit Hash!

As a matter of fact, other candidates have even been other animals, including cats, pigs, a chicken of course, and donkey with no apparent party affiliation. The last four mayors of Rabbit Hash have had zero political experience prior to entering the race. None of them could complete sentences either, but certainly weren’t gaffe-ridden. However, none of them confused their sister for their wife or vice versa.

Like most other election this year, this race had the biggest voter turnout ever reported with 22,985 votes cast. Wildbur Beast won the civic duties by acquiring 13,143 of those votes, unseating the incumbent Mayor Brynneth Pawltro. She was a Pit Bull rescue who had been in office since 2017.

Rabbit Hash, KY is a small town 78 miles north of Lexington, which holds this special election for a good cause. This Boone County river community has been electing a dog for mayor since the late 1990s, and started purely as a fundraiser. Votes are actually placed by donating $1 to the Rabbit Hash Historical Society.

This year’s campaign raised a total of $13,156, while Wilbur pulled in $6,165 for the community. Wilbur has even bigger plans ahead however, with ambitions set on raising more money for causes including mental health and breast cancer!

Unlike the state of politics around the world, Rabbit Hash’s political climate continues to be a glimmer of hope everyone far and wide. The runner-up, Jack Rabbit the beagle, and third-place finisher, Poppy the Golden Retriever will remain Rabbit Hash Ambassadors.
