Dillon Carmichael Tips Hat to Uncle Eddie on “Lucky Man” Cover
The Dillon Carmichael “Lucky Man” cover starts off with the narrative listing out small nuisances in life that we may often complain about. Those things may include nominal things like the weather and a job. However, then transitions to remind oneself of the more important luxuries we may overlook at times, such as one’s health and time spent with loved-ones.
For those who may not Dillon’s background, he not only is a proud Kentuckian but also comes from a long line of musicians and entertainers. He is the nephew of one-half of country music duo Montgomery Gentry. Eddie Montgomery is not only Dillon’s uncle, but also a large influence for the budding artist. As a result, John Michael Montgomery is also his uncle, therefore Walker Montgomery is his cousin. Did we mention Dillon’s mom joins him on stage from time to time?

“Lucky Man” Lyrics:
I have days where I hate my job
This little town, and the whole world too
Last Sunday when the Wildcats lost
Lord, it put me in a bad mood
I have moments when I curse the rain
Then complain when the sun’s too hot
I look around at what everyone has
And I forget about all I’ve got
But I know I’m a lucky man
God’s given me a pretty fair hand
Got a house and a piece of land
A few dollars in a coffee can
My old truck’s still running good
My ticker’s ticking like they say it should
I got supper in the oven, a good woman’s loving
And one more day to be my little kid’s dad
Lord, knows I’m a lucky man
Got some friends who would be here fast
I could call ’em any time of day
Got a brother who’s got my back
Got a mama who I swear’s a saint
Got a brand new rod and reel
Got a full week off this year
Dad had a close call last spring
It’s a miracle he’s still here
But I know I’m a lucky man
God’s given me a pretty fair hand
Got a house and a piece of land
A few dollars in a coffee can
My old truck’s still running good
My ticker’s ticking like they say it should
I got supper in the oven, a good woman’s loving
And one more day to be my little kid’s dad
Lord, knows I’m a lucky man
Yeah, my old truck’s still running good
My ticker’s ticking like they say it should
I got supper in the oven, a good woman’s loving
And even my bad days ain’t that bad
Yeah, I’m a lucky man

History of “Lucky Man”:
Lucky Man was originally written by David Cory Lee and Dave Turnbull. On Dillon’s version however, he personalizes it slightly. He most notably swaps out Bengals (as in Cincinnati) to Wildcasts (as in University of Kentucky). The original song was recorded by American country music duo Montgomery Gentry, and it was released in 2007. It was the second single off of their album titled, Some People Change.
The song went on to become the duo’s third #1 single on US Billboard Hot Country Songs. Additionally, it received a nomination for Grammy Award for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.
