If Kentucky has one thing to offer, it’s the great outdoors! If you’re keeping count, there are more resort parks than any other state in the nation. With 2 sides of the state being covered completely with waterways, producing 1,100 commercially navigable miles, Kentucky outdoors have an abundance of fresh water, lakes, and rivers. With great access to fresh water, produces great access to fishing and watersports. That means it’s no coincidence that Lake Cumberland is the Houseboat Capital of the World! In fact, Somerset, KY which is adjacent to Lake Cumberland was actually where the houseboat was born. In 1953, this development made national news and Somerset native, Jim Sharpe, became a lake legend with the first lakestyle houseboat. Cave Run Lake has 8,300 acres of surface area which is in the Daniel Boone National Forest near Morehead and Frenchburg. This Kentucky lake is known as the “Muskie Fishing Capitol of the South.” Cumberland Falls, located southwest of Corbin, is the only waterfall in the world to regularly display a Moonbow. Mammoth Cave claims the title for “World’s Longest Cave,” with 420 miles mapped thus far, with that number continuing to grow annually. While Bowling Green’s Lost River Cave claims the title for shortest and deepest underground river in the world. It also features the largest cave opening east of the Mississippi River.
