History Behind World’s Longest Yard Sale

It was all started in 1987 by Mike Walker, a native Tennessean as a way to bring traffic and visitors off the interstate to explore the charm of small towns. Although the World’s Longest Yard Sale was created with Tennessee tourism in mind, however, it shortly expanded into six states.

Travelers attending the sale typically take back roads instead of highways. By doing so, they experience not only the 690-mile-long strip of vendors, but also the historical attractions, state parks and rural towns along the way.

The event is not owned by anyone, but it is promoted on its website where one can find tips, vendor information, maps, and of course, COVID-19 guidelines this year.

The yard sale flows from Addison, Michigan, to Chattanooga, Tennessee, through Ohio and Kentucky. From there, it wanders through northwest Georgia to Noccalula Falls, a 250-acre (100-hectare) public park in Gadsden. The largest hub is in said to be in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, where there are more than 400 vendors!
