A 600 bed “dormitory” will be built at the University of Kentucky’s main campus in Lexington. The project is a collaboration with the UK college of Agriculture and the James B. Beam Institute of Kentucky Spirits, alongside a generous donation from the Independent Stave Company. The warehouse will house pre-mature barrels of whiskey, and will serve as a research hub for students.

Beam Suntory founded The Beam Institute last year, with a generous donation of $5 million dollars. The goal of the institute is to teach our next generation distillers from a program that not only covers skills needed to succeed at the undergraduate level, but also at graduate and professional levels.

The Independent Stave Company:
Brad Boswell, CEO of The Independent Stave Company announced that his family would also donate $1 million dollars to fund the University of Kentucky Whiskey dormitory project. Importantly, the funds will be used to mature spirits distilled by students, particular whiskey studies, and research.

The University of Kentucky warehouse will be named the “Independent Stave Company Boswell Family Barrel Warehouse.” Construction is set to be begin in a few weeks and is expected to take 18 months. The dormitory will be the first distillery and maturation warehouse on a college campus in Kentucky, and one of the first in the nation.
