Honor National Whiskey Sour Day by Sipping on a Refreshing Makers Mark Whiskey Sour

What exactly is a Whiskey Sour?

A Whiskey Sour is typically a cocktail of whiskey (for us, obviously always bourbon) mixed with sugar and lemon juice. It is garnished with orange and cherry. Whiskey sours are then shaken and served over neat or on the rocks.

A National Holiday Dedicated to the Whiskey Sour:

The origin of the Whiskey Sour is not truly known, however, the first mention of a Whiskey Sour was in a 1862 book known as “The Bartenders Guide” by jerry Thomas. There are several versions of the cocktail however. One story claims that English Naval Officer “Old Grog” Vernon was famous for mixing variations of the sour for his crew members on long voyages at sea. Citrus was known to fight scurvy, and alcohol was much safer to drink than water.

The drink became so popular that it eventually made its popularity to land.

Maker’s Sour Ingredients

How to Make a Maker’s Sour

– via Makers Mark Cocktails

  • Add Maker’s Mark, lemon juice and simple syrup to an ice-filled shaker.
  • Give it a good shake.
  • Strain into a rocks glass over ice.
  • Garnish with a lemon peel and a cherry.

Pro Tips from Maker’s Mark

  • Use fresh squeezed lemon juice , its the most important ingredient in the cocktail. Pre-roll the lemon under your hand before cutting it as it loosens up the pulp making the fruit easier to juice!
  • Add a little fun to your shake, and SHAKE WELL!
  • Break out your nice glassware … a drink like this deserves to be shown off.
  • Chill your glassware for a nice frosty cocktail.
  • For a traditional Whiskey Sour, add an egg white before shaking the drink. It will create a rich texture (and yes, it is safe.)
