Avid Outdoorsmen can now look forward to an ultimate collaboration amongst two of their favorite past times, fishing and bourbon! A Van Winkle x Abel Fly Reel Limited Edition release is coming soon! Abel Fly Reels will handmake around 200 examples of this special release Old Rip Van Winkle Fly Reel.
The limited edition Old Rip Van Winkle Fly Reel is inspired by the iconic bourbon brand and a new book, Pappyland, written by Wright Thompson. Both of these anticipated releases will officially hit shelves in Spring 2021. However, like with every Pappy release, sometimes you have to be creative with your acquisition. In this instance, purchasing the book early, could have also increased your chances of winning the first reel. Skylark Bookshop, in collaboration with the other partners, opened up a giveaway for purchasers ordering the book before their December 16th virtual live event.
Is this a collector’s item or an insane fishing reel?
The answer is yes! The reel itself is a Abel Super Series 11/12 model. Like all Abel Super Series reels, it starts from aerospace-grade aluminum. The design of the fishing reel is inspired by the label found on Old Rip Van Winkle 10 Year Kentucky Bourbon. The artwork is first laser etched into the aluminum. Then each unit is hand painted individually for the finest craftsmanship. How much does it cost you asked? Lest we say, probably just as much of a unicorn find as a bottle of 23-year-old Pappy itself. Actually, no official price has been announced just yet, but it’s likely north of the $2,000 range. Therefore, quite in line with the secondary markets online.

Abel Limited Edition Reels:
Abel Fly Reels is no stranger to limited edition fly reels, however this may be one of the coolest? We’d gladly take any of these rare collectibles, and then put them to use immediately! Both the Abel Limited Edition Johnny Cash Super Series Reel, as well as the Abel + AC/DC Limited Edition Fly Reel are heavy hitters in their own right.
