A Non-Alcoholic Bourbon: Spiritless 74 Tastes Just Like the Real Thing
Founders Lauren Chitwood, Abby Ferguson, and Lexie Larsen came up with the idea of Spiritless bourbon when their company was in need of a non-alcoholic beverage . They were planning an event and could not find the perfect solution; so they decided to make it themselves. That’s when non alcoholic bourbon was born!
Consumers constantly look for mocktail options that are not boring, such as your typical club soda. Other non-alcoholic options such as beer, vodka, and gin do exist, but they realized they wanted an alternative to Kentucky’s tasty native spirit of bourbon – and so, Spiritless was founded.
The company was founded in 2019, and has been preparing to launch its first non-alcoholic spirit inspired by bourbon, naming it Kentucky 74. The “bourbon” is a reverse-distilled drink that feels and looks like the real thing.
Named after being the 74th distillery in the state, Kentucky 74 is made with a grain-neutral spirit and chars of oak for an extraction process to pull the flavors right into the non-alcoholic bourbon. The spirit is then reserve distilled, resulting in just 0.5 % of alcohol. Importantly, it tastes extremely familiar with note of oak, vanilla, and caramel.

The nose feels familiar, with notes of oak, smoke, caramel and vanilla.It’s meant to be consumed in a cocktail, not necessarily sipped on its own like many traditional bourbons. Even though there’s no ethanol, we wanted the finish to be a bit warming, that Kentucky hug people talk about,” she said. “So there is a bit of warming at the back. The bourbon reviews talk about it like a ginger heat. It’s a nice experience.”

The launch of Spiritless 74 will be a great way for consumers to enjoy their time at events, cocktail parties, and dinners without having one too many. It provides a safe option for parents such as the female founders of the brand.
Additionally, the product is already taking off: thousands of bottles have been pre-ordered online in all 50 states. Spiritless plans to serve it in restaurants and retail locations in eight weeks. The company also plans on developing a gin and tequila by early 2021.
