Here’s Why Laha’s Red Castle Has the Best Burgers in Kentucky
If you’re not from Kentucky, and if you haven’t seen Kentucky’s episode of True South, then you’re missing out on the best burger in Kentucky. Three-time James Beard Award winner John T. Edge hosts the show and the first among his stops is the infamous Laha’s Red Castle.
Since 1934, the Laha’s have served burgers to the Hodgenville community. Although Mae Owens has worked the griddle for more than 30 years, she retired on the show and the Mayor declares an official “Mae Owen’s” day in her honor! When asked why Mae works so hard, her response is simple – “It’s in my blood.” The $2 burgers are nothing more than a smothered beef patty made with love. They’re so good that even Chef Newman Miller from Star Hill Provisions of Maker’s Mark Distillery enjoys them.
More About the Burgers:
Laha’s Red Castle burgers are known to bring customers in simply by their smell. The burger smell fills the town square air and reaches the Shell gas station up the road. In Hodgenville and beyond, they are known for their seasoned onion burgers, cooked on a vintage Vulcan Hart grill that has been used since the 1950’s. Laha’s was started by William and Sally Laha in 1934, and now Kelly Laha is the third generation owner alongside his wife, Anita.
If you haven’t had the best burger in Kentucky yet, take the drive to Hodgenivlle, and you certainly won’t be disappointed by the family owned burger joint that has been serving up burgers for years the same exact way.
