Mammath Cave Stage Lines Returns To The Lodge at Mammoth Cave

The Mammoth Cave Stagecoach or Mammoth Cave Stage Lines makes its return after 120 years! This historic beauty is now on display atThe Lodge at Mammoth Cave. Note, the building is still currently under construction, but it was designed from the planning stages to host this restored work of art that has been tucked away for the last 50 years. Therefore, it officially arrived at the Mammoth Cave hotel as its construction moves closer towards completion.

Back in the 19th century, stagecoach travel was all the rage as the United States expanded westward. The Mammoth Cave National Park area was no exception, with stagecoaches ruling the roads that would later become major highways connecting Louisville and Nashville. Southern Kentucky had three stagecoach company lines, shuttling passengers from Park City and Cave City to the famous Kentucky attraction, Mammoth Cave.

Now, don’t let the glitz and glam of Hollywood fool you. Stagecoach travel was no walk in the park. Picture bumpy, unpaved roads in a land full of sinkholes. Yikes! And let’s not forget about those crafty bandits who saw stagecoaches as prime targets. In fact, rumor has it that notorious outlaws Frank and Jesse James might have pulled off a heist near Little Hope Church back in 1880.

But fear not, weary travelers! At the end of the tumultuous journey to the Mammoth Cave Hotel, a bugle horn would sound, welcoming guests to a warm, homecooked meal and a cozy bed. The bugle would also alert fellow employees at the hotel that new guests were arriving so they could spring into action to provide the best hospitality.

The Mammoth Cave National Park Association has been planning a grand homecoming for this historic stagecoach, which has been years in the making. The Andrew McCoy stagecoach, built way back in 1855, was previously being showcased at the National Cave Museum and Library in Park City, KY. It even made a pit stop at the National Corvette Museum’s Kentucky 225 transportation exhibit a few years ago.
