Louisville Women’s Basketball Ranking #1, First Time Ever For the Program
The Associated Press basketball poll has the Louisville Women’s basketball ranking #1, which is a first ever achievement in program history. The Cards had been previously sitting at the #2 spot for a period of 6 weeks. Stanford fell to Colorado in overtime over the weekend, while Louisville beat Florida State 84-56. This moved UofL to a flawless record of 12-0.
The University of Louisville head coach Jeff Walz said, “it’s been a lot of hard work and we’ve had a lot of great players and a great staff.” Not to get ahead of themselves however, he also added, “obviously it doesn’t do you anything come March, but it’s something that we’re proud of, because we have sustained something here for 14 years,” Moreover, Coach Walz said he would still like to see some improvements from his team.
UofL isn’t the only new face atop the nation’s women’s basketball ranking however. NC State also received five first-place votes. This is their best ranking since since Dec. 31, 1990! Cross-state rivals Kentucky sits at #12.
