Coming off a close loss to cross-state rival Louisville, UK looked to start their SEC league play on the road. This would be a big game for the Cats, good, bad, or indifferent. It lived up to that projection in more ways than one. To add to the storyline, the first game would be on the road in Starkville against a solid Mississippi State team. Terrence Clarke would not compete in the game, due to a lingering ankle injury that he had previously tried to play through. Nonetheless, the Kentucky vs Mississippi State basketball score finished at 78-73, with the Cats on top!
Despite the win, Kentucky still struggled with turnovers. However the team did play hard, picking up 10 blocks in the game. Coach Cal pickup up a technical foul arguing a non-call, which quickly turned into an ejection during the same sequence. After Cal left the game, Kentucky went on a run. The real story of the game however, revolved around a surprising freshman — Dontaie Allen!
Big Blue Nation has been focused on the topic of late, “when will we see Dontaie Allen?” The Kentucky native dropped 7 three-pointers in the game and single handily improved the Cats offensive output! This was the fist game all season that Kentucky has scored more than 65 points in a game! Allen went 7 for 11 from behind the arch, while adding another long two-point field goal. He went on to finish 8 of 13 overall on the night. The Cats shot 52.4% as a team from behind the three-point line. This proved crucial in the overtime, where they converted on 3 of 3.
