The #23 Kentucky Wildcats took on #8 Auburn to kick off the SEC season.
Coming into Saturday’s game, the University of Kentucky football program hadn’t lost at Auburn in 15 years. However, the Wildcats would be coming into this special 10-game SEC season opener as an underdog based on national polls alone. Nonetheless, Wildcat fans were excited to see the Kentucky vs Auburn matchup!
That didn’t stop the Cats from coming out strong however, and even getting on the board first. After jumping to an early 7-0 lead, the Auburn Tigers answered back with a touchdown of their own, then hit on a two-point conversion to go up 7-8.
Refs Blow a TD Review for UK, Auburn Pulls Away
As the first half was winding down, the Wildcats march down the field on a strong drive and attempt to punch the ball in from inside the 5. See for yourself and make the call, did the UK running back cross the plane?
Even after review, the referees didn’t give the touchdown to Kentucky. Then on a short 4th down, Terry throws an interception to give up a huge return. At first, it seemed like a Pick-6, but there was a targeting penalty on Auburn to save at least one touchdown. UK would not really ever recapture that momentum for the remainder of the game, and go on to lose 29-13.
After the games, Stoops stated, “He was clearly in. I really can’t give a good explanation. I didn’t really get good explanations all day. I don’t know if it’s us wearing these masks and all that, I don’t know. But that was a big swing.”
The Tigers pull off this matchup of Kentucky vs Auburn to snap the losing streak. Kentucky will move on to play Ole Miss next Saturday to continue the SEC season. You can watch a video with full highlights below.
