Recap
The Kentucky Wildcats returned to Kroger Field in an attempt to continue their undefeated streak for the 2021 college football season.
Florida started the game with a 75-yard drive, which put them on the board first. With the Gators up 7-0 quickly, Kentucky took no time to bounce right back! The offense went to Wan’Dale Robinson on a short screen pass, which he turned up field shaking off a few defender with a quick jab step. The recent Nebraska transfer essentially turned a lateral into 41-yard touchdown! This tied the electric game at 7-7 early.
The Gators came back just before the half ended with Jace Christmann nailing a career-long 51-yard field goal. This gave UofF a 10-7 halftime lead over UK. For those keeping track, this was the same halftime score when Kentucky beat Florida in Gainesville, snapping a decades-long losing streak.
The Wildcats hit a slump in the third quarter when their turnover weakness appeared again. Will Levis threw his sixth interception of the season as Florida looked to extend it’s halftime lead. That all changed however, when defensive end Josh Paschal came up with a huge tackle on 3rd and 13. This put an abrupt end to their drive, but Paschal wasn’t done just yet. He went on to block their 48-yard field goal attempt!
That ball dropped into the arms of Trevin Wallace, who took it 76-yards to change the whole game’s momentum. Kentucky kicker, Matt Ruffolo, also had the PAT blocked to put UK up 13-10. Nonetheless, the Wildcats’ defense pulled the offense out of a vulnerable situation to regain the edge.
The Kentucky Wildcats offense failed to extend the lead in the fourth quarter however, failing to convert on a 4th and 2 in Florida territory. Have no fear however, the UK defense stepped up for the challenge once again! Linebacker J.J. Weaver picked off a Gator pass, although later fumbling the ball. Nonetheless, UK’s Tyrell Ajian fell on the ball to keep possession.
Running back, Chris Rodriguez punched in a touchdown, giving the Wildcats a 20-10 lead with 11:32 remaining. Florida came charging back with the clock expiring on multiple occasions, first putting up a field goal to pull within 20-13. Nonetheless, the Wildcats held a goal line stand to bat down a pass on 4th and 8 with only 0:22 seconds remaining to seal the deal.
