Kentucky Hunting
Kentucky has a long history of hunting, dating back to the frontier days of Daniel Boone. He actually began a hunting expedition in the Commonwealth in 1769. Hunting in Kentucky dates well before he arrived though, as he would soon discover after being captured by the Shawnees. Since Kentucky was their hunting land, they considered him a poacher and confiscated all of his skins. Kentucky hunting has a lot of things going for it, including great wildlife management areas which contribute to about 100 public land zones. Some of those areas include Pennyrile State Forest, Peabody WMA, James R Rich WMA, John A Kleber WMA, Taylorsville Lake WMA.
Kentucky offers great big game opportunities such as whitetail deer and elk. The elk population in the western part of the state is actually the largest east of the Mississippi River. Land Between The Lakes offers lottery hunts every year, drawing upwards of 200 chances to take a trophy elk. Kentucky also consistently finishes in the top states for producing the most Boone and Crockett bucks each year. Outdoor Life actually rated it as the Best Deer Hunting State, partially due to its hunter friendliness and cost of outfitted hunts.
