Looking towards the future in 2023, Kentucky will break ground on an amazing 35,000-square-foot distillery and a huge 20,000 square-foot rickhouse at Lanes Run Business Park. Everyone’s looking forward to this exciting project coming alive by 2025 with anticipated 45 fulltime jobs for the local economy! Governor Andy Beshear officially announced it last fall – cheers to that announcement!
“We are thrilled to be able to reveal an early look of Bjarke Ingels Group’s design for the new Blue Run Spirits distillery in Georgetown, giving everyone a glimpse at where we are heading in developing a welcoming, unexpected and modern facility with a true focus on sustainability,” said Blue Run Spirits CEO and cofounder Mike Montgomery. “This will be a game-changing addition to Blue Run’s long-range business plans, allowing us to meet forecasted and unforeseen demand, while also giving our Whiskey Director Shaylyn Gammon and Liquid Advisor Jim Rutledge a home base of operations.”
Get ready to take a thrilling ride with “Meander,” a design that captures the wild adventure of limestone-infused waters from the majestic Royal Spring in Georgetown, as they twist and turn through the distilling, aging, and blending process to transform into the absolutely exquisite Blue Run bourbons and rye whiskeys. The whimsical rollercoaster of flavors playfully leads you to the grand finale: the discovery of how Blue Run earned its name from one of the creative founders inspired by the Royal Spring. Cheers to that!

Behind The Design at Blue Run Spirits Distillery
The Bjarke Ingels Group, or BIG, is taking the globe by storm with their trendy offices in hotspots like Copenhagen, New York City, London, Barcelona, and Shenzhen. Since 2005, these creative masterminds have dabbled in everything from jaw-dropping architecture and urban planning to sleek interior design and innovative product development. Some of their swanky projects include the iconic Google Headquarters, the playful Lego Brand Museum, the luxurious Audemars Piguet Museum and Hotel, the sparkling San Pellegrino Flagship Factory, and even the culinary wonderland that is Copenhagen’s Noma restaurant. These guys truly are the BIG deal!
“For Blue Run, we have boiled the entire process of whiskey-making down to a single linear sequence – from distilling to maturing to bottling. The half-mile long process meanders through the gentle hillsides creating bends and banks, inlets, and outlooks. A single shingled roof of photovoltaic tiles twists and turns to maintain optimal orientation even as the activities underneath require grandeur or intimacy. In the same way the Royal Spring is shaped by how the water flows through it, Blue Run Distillery is shaped by the flow of the whiskey and the processes and people who make it,” said Founder & Creative Director, BIG, Bjarke Ingels.
“Design is at the center of everything we do at Blue Run – from our liquid to our bottle to our new distillery,” continued Montgomery. “The design BIG has developed is in dialogue with the landscape, the meandering path to making whiskey and a manifestation of the bold, distinct and inviting ethos that signifies Blue Run Spirits.”
Blue Run Spirits has been on a boozy roll since its 2020 launch, uncorking 13 fabulous bourbon and rye whiskeys. They’ve sold a whopping 21,000 9-liter cases in 2022 alone – talk about a 300% tipsy growth spurt! And guess what? Their divine drams will soon grace shelves in New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Washington, Minnesota, and Ontario. Cheers to that!
