With a whiteout winter storm hitting the Commonwealth, officials are suggesting to stay off the roads for the next few days. However, the hills across the 859 are wide open! We’ve put together a list of the best sledding spots in Lexington, KY.
While Louisville Parks and Recreation officially open designated sledding hills from 9am to 11PM, Lexington is a bit less “official.” The general rule of thumb for snow accumulation by other municipalities is a minimum of 2 to 3 inches of snowfall on the ground. This is the minimum requirement just to avoid turf damage. At a quick glance, you can determine if enough snow accumulation has occurred if blades of grass are poking through the snow cover.

Higbee Mill Park
Higbee Mill Park is situated in Southwest Lexington, specifically in the Stonewall Community. Just to the south of the park is Man O War Boulevard, with Clays Mill Road just to its east.

Jacobson Park
Jacobson Park is a large 216 acre park, situated in east Lexington. The southern border of the park is KY-418, otherwise known as Athens Boonesboro Road.

James Lane Allen Elementary
The next spot, James Lane Allen Elementary, is located near the Kroger bordering the Gardenside neighborhood.

Veterans Park Elementary School is located on the southern side of Lexington, situated just south of Man O War Boulevard and north of Cumberland Hill.

Clinton Road Park sits within the Shriners neighborhood. This is located in the southeastern portion of the city. This area also gets its name from the Shriners Hospital for Children, located nearby.

SLEDDING SAFETY TIPS:
- Only use devices designed for sledding.
- Wear appropriate clothing – loose ends or flaps can easily get caught.
- Sleds should contain a number of riders appropriate for the designated device during each descent.
- Dress in layers, so you can remove one layer without risking frostbite. Several thin layers are warmer than one bulky layer.
- Make sure you’re with someone who knows your name and can contact family in an emergency; parents should remain with their children.
- Don’t drink alcohol before sledding – it impairs your ability to use good judgment and causes the body to lose heat more rapidly.
- Check your path for trees and other objects before starting your descent.
- Don’t sled head-first or standing up. Good visibility is necessary during your descent.
- Don’t face backwards, and make sure your vision isn’t obscured by hats and scarves.
- When climbing the hill, stay to the sides. Don’t climb in the sledding path. It’s important to remember that slopes can become very crowded during peak times.
