Beer Cheese: The History Behind it All

what is beer cheese

In honor of National Cheese Day, we’ve decided to share the history behind Kentucky’s favorite cheese otherwise known as beer cheese.

… So What Exactly Is It?

Beer cheese was started in the 1930’s on the banks of the Kentucky River in Winchester, Kentucky. Legend has it that the spicy spread was a recipe by Chef Joe Allman. Allman created the recipe for his cousin Johnnie, the owner of the Driftwood Inn. Johnnie served it as a free snack to his customers to increase beer purchases. It was known as “SNAPPY” Cheese, and today under Howard’s Creek Authentic Beer Cheese known as “The Original Kentucky River Valley Delight.” In the 1960’s, he lost his restaurant along with his recipes causing for a controversial debate that dates until today: who has the original beer cheese recipe?

The spread consists of a processed cheese base with a sharp, sometimes spicy cheddar flavor. Beer is then added to provide its flavor and texture. Spices such as garlic, pepper, horseradish, and dry mustard are often added to the mixture. Although spice levels vary from mild to hot, all beer cheeses tend to have a strong garlic flavor. You don’t have to go to a Kentucky tavern to access the recipe. The recipe has gotten so popular and through the years has been widely modified, that many even make it from scratch right in their own kitchens!

How Is It Served?

Fresh sliced vegetables and saltine crackers have always been used for dipping. However, now, many can find the spread being used as appetizer dip for pretzels and crudite, as a condiment on burgers, and the list goes on.

On February 21, 2013, Clark County was recognized as the official birthplace of beer cheese.

Where Is It Sold?

Although most popular in Kentucky, the delicious spicy spread can be found nationwide in grocery stores and restaurants. The recipe has been tweaked by many, and countless chefs have made it their own. Upon leaving Kentucky, the Queen of England was seen leaving Lexington with several tubs!
